I live in British Columbia (Canada) and I’m just wondering when you have to start paying income taxes. I am currently 14 years old and I’m planning on getting a job at tim hortons ( 8 dollars an hour). Do I have to pay Income Tax once I start?
There is no age restriction on paying tax. Tax will be withheld from your cheque each week, and at the end of the year you will have to file an income Tax Return, which will likely result in all the tax coming back to you, since you will likely make less than the basic exemption amount (currently $9600 per year) The exemption means everyone makes the first $9600 tax free.
If your yearly income is going to be less than $9600 for sure, you can make application to CRA (the tax department) to NOT have tax deducted weekly if you prefer, but it does need to be applied for, which can be a hassle.
Incidentally, most Tim’s won’t hire 14 yr olds, but if they do, you will need your parent’s written permission to work.
