Can you refile an old tax return with a transcript?

I need to do an amendment on last years tax return which I didn’t make a copy of. I’m wondering if I would be able to send them my transcript with the rest of the required paper work and still be able to get the rest of my refund. I’m trying to avoid paying to 60 bucks to have them mail me my old return if I can help it.

Your NEW return for that tax year will have to be the1040X when you need to correct an error that has been made on an original filled in and filed 1040 FIT return.

  1. Usually yes–you are going to copy over the key numbers to the column A of the 1040X.

What are you changing? Why do you think you are entitled to a further refund?

  2. No, you need to file a 1040X to amend. You don’t send your old return in with the new one. You just send the new one, whcih just shows the changes to the old one.
